Bringing a new life into the world is an extraordinary experience, but let’s be honest—post-labour recovery is no walk in the park! It’s one of the biggest hurdles new moms face, and having a smooth recovery is crucial for your mental well-being and getting back to feeling like yourself, as soon as possible.
Every pregnancy and labour are unique, so while it might be tempting to stock up on every product out there, trust me, you likely won’t need all of it. I learned this the hard way, and I hope to save you some money and stress. For this reason, I’ve rounded up my top 10 post-labour recovery must-haves to keep you comfortable, supported, and on the path to healing in no time.
top ten post labour recovery items
Slip On Shoes
Bending down to tie your shoes? Hard pass. Slip-on shoes are lifesavers during recovery when every muscle in your body is on strike. My personal favorite? The UGG Tazz in the winter and/or the Birkenstock Bostons for the warmer months! They’re both comfy, stylish, and were my go-to for waddling out of the hospital. They were my best friends throughout pregnancy, too.

Soft Button Down Night Gown
Comfort is key, and soft, stretchy button-down nightgowns hit the mark. These are perfect for nighttime nursing or pumping—no fumbling required. They’re available in different lengths to suit all heights (I’m 5’3”, and the regular length hits just above my knees). I practically lived in mine, paired with a fluffy robe, for the first couple of months.

Nursing Bras
Finding the right nursing bra is a game-changer. I liked these V-neck nursing bras recommended by a fellow mom. They’re supportive, comfortable, affordable, the lower v-neckline doesn’t show under most tops, and the straps are thin enough so you can still wear a cute tank top in the summer months. Comfort is key because you don’t realize that you’ll be wearing these bras 24/7 —yes, even to bed!

Lansinoh Nursing Pads
Leaking milk is a reality no one warns you about. These nursing pads stay in place, keep your skin dry, and prevent irritation. Enough said!

Always Radiant Flex Foam Overnight Pads
Once the initial heavy bleeding slows down and you’re over the disposable undies, these pads are lifesavers. They’re thin, super absorbent, and incredibly comfortable. Go for size 5 or 6 for full coverage—you’ll thank me later.

Frida Mom Upside Down Peri Bottle
The peri bottle you get from the hospital does the job, but this one? Far superior!! Its angled spout makes cleaning up easier, gentler, and way less messy. It also packs easily because the spout tucks into the bottle when it’s not in use. Trust me, this little upgrade is worth every penny.

Disposable Underwear
This was another amazing gift from a fellow momma. They’re not glamorous, but 100% necessary, especially in the first week or two post-labour. Depends Disposable Underwear offer a great fit (comes in size S-XL), light tummy support, and more comfort than the hospital mesh versions. I also tried Always Disposable Underwear, which are soft and come in a cute pink color, but they’re fragranced—so keep that in mind.

Tucks Witch Hazel Pads
These cooling pads are a godsend for healing stitches and soothing irritation. Witch hazel helps with inflammation and leaves you feeling fresh. An absolute staple for post-labour recovery.

A Good Robe
Post-labour life is all about comfort, and a soft, cozy robe is non-negotiable. Whether it’s chilly mornings or late-night nursing sessions, a quality robe will keep you warm and comfortable. I wore mine through my entire pregnancy, post labour, and continue to wear it a year later—money well spent! The one I have is from H&M from two years ago and is very similar to the Barefoot Dreams ones, super cozy! Here’s a similar option for half the price! If you’re in warmer weather (I’m in Canada and it gets pretty chilly), I would opt for a soft muslin cotton robe.

Chicken Essence Soup or Bone Broth Delivery
One of the most well known traditions is Chinese confinement where you essentially stay home in your pjs for the entire month to rest, stay warm, and let your body recover. While you do this there is a long laundry list of things you can and cannot do/eat. I followed a few of the rules as best and as long as I could and one I truly believe in is the nutritious Chinese post-labour diet, which consists of ginger and hearty, but healthy meals and best of all, daily chicken essence soup. Chicken essence is a nutritious, light broth that is said to help with fatique, milk production, and overall body recovery. These pre-packaged broths are easy to prepare and a nourishing way to start your day!

Your recovery journey
Giving birth is an unforgettable experience that takes a toll on your body. Prioritizing your recovery and having a few helpful, comforting items on hand can make all the difference. Remember, it’s okay to take it slow—your well-being comes first!
